Typically, the season launches in August, regional qualifying events are held between October and end of November, with the national championship the first weekend in December every year. International events are run from March till June and the world championship is in April. Preparation requires a minimum of one or two hours a week, which can be intensified closer to championship events.


It is possible to register for the competition by completing the online form on the official FIRST ® LEGO® League South Africa website.

During registration, you can decide at which regional event to participate.

Once completed, admin will verify the data entered and the team receives a confirmation email, in which the methods of purchasing the competition material, the deadlines and all the information necessary to prepare for the challenge are communicated.


Based on the choices made during registration and the related information received, complete the payment . Registration is considered finalized only after proof of payment has been received.

The team coach will be added to a whatsapp group for team mentorship, training oppertunities and support.


Each participating team receives the competition field with the game mat and the LEGO® missions to assemble to prepare for the Robot Game.

Each participating team also has digital materials available. These are the official guide manuals to prepare for the challenge, translated into Italian. In particular, the shared material consists of:

  • guide for coaches ( Team Meeting Guide ), with a proposed route divided into work sessions;
  • work notebook ( Engineering Notebook ) designed for team members, in which they can note the progress made in the work carried out;
  • the Robot Game Rulebook.

The teams prepare for the challenge by using the material received and their own supplied laptop.

Teasm will received financial support to buy materials for their own table from their nearby hardware store. (Table build guide and cutting list is available) This table will be used to to practice robot runs on the mat and mission models. This is part of preparing for the robot games at the event.

They design, build and program their own robot to carry out missions. Furthermore, with the help of the Team Meeting Guide and the Engineering Notebook, they research a problem related to the theme of the year to develop their own Innovative Project.


The journey culminates in a day of celebration where you participate in an event with other teams! Those who participate in the championship can thus earn promotion to the subsequent stages.
