Limerick City and County Council is marking Earth Day 2016 next Friday (22nd April) by hosting a waste prevention and recycling event at Mungret Recycling Centre from 11.00am to 3.00pm.
Earth Day was started in 1970 as a way to focus attention on the environmental problems on our planet. This year, the Council is holding an event focusing on the 5 Rs, namely Rethink, Reuse, Restore, Repair and Recycle.
An estimated 28,000 people use Mungret Recycling Centre each year with a large proportion of visitors availing of the on-site reuse facilities, which encourage the reuse of everyday items ranging from tables and chairs to paint and bicycles.

The upcoming Earth Day event will provide an opportunity for members of the public to learn about composting and food waste at the Stopfoodwaste kitchen and view examples of Upcycled furniture courtesy of Back2New Upcycling in Newcastle West.
Security in Shredding will shred confidential items from householders and SMEs (limit of 2 black bags per person) between 1.00pm and 3.00pm, while Limerick Smarter Travel will host a bicycle reuse and repair stand.
Visitors will also be able to meet some of the Live 95 FM crew who will be broadcasting from the Recycling Centre. In addition, Limerick City and County Council will make available 90 litre bags of pre-packed compost and bark mulch on the day while stocks last.
Mungret Recycling Centre, which is managed by Indaver Ireland on behalf of the Local Authority, is open daily Tuesday to Saturday from 10.00am to 4.45pm (cars €5, car & trailer €12). Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is accepted free of charge, while up to two bags per person of confidential paper may be shredded on site between 1pm and 3pm on the day.
