The Background
AsIAm is Ireland's National Charity for the Autism Community. Our aim is to make Ireland the most Autism-Friendly and inclusive place to live in the world and, in order to achieve this, we have a range of programmes and initiatives that provide support right throughout a person's life.
Through our work, AsIAm has identified that many of the barriers to inclusion that are in place for autistic individuals and their families are not a result of autism, but instead a result of how society chooses to respond. Therefore, our work aims to educate and inform society about autism to increase the level of understanding that surrounds the condition.
There are four main barriers to inclusion that autistic people experience; Communication differences, the sensory environment, predictability and control, and the judgement and attitude of others.
