Temps

Depending on the book you select and your timeline will determine weekly time commitments. But plan to dedicate roughly 20 hours from start to finish.

1. Think about some children's books that provide engaging content and beautfiul pictures. Select 1-3 book options as potential candidates for the StoryWalk.

2. Decide on the location of your StoryWalk, perhaps one that aligns with your book selection (park, playground, school, etc.) Remember, you want someplace that's easily accessible for people to view the StoryWalk.

Successful initiatives require planning, coordination and community participation. Consider who should be assiting you. How will the team work together and allocate responsibilities?

Here are a few things to consider as you build out your team:

  • Create a project team that represent the vision and who are willing and able to see the project through.
  • Identify potential partners who might support the work or donate resources and/or materials.
  • Build a volunteer community group that will work with you.
  • Plan your budget accordingly (expense chart will be provided)

As part of the ChangeX community, you will have a meeting with Rebecca from the Let's Play America team to answer all your questions and help you make your StoryWalk the best it can be!

It's important to recieve the appropriate permission for both the book and site usage.

1. Contact the publisher(s) to recieve permission to use their book for a StoryWalk. In our experience, publishers are very happy to allow participants to share their stories for free community events. If you need any assistance, we are happy to help!

2. Contact the correct authority to discuss permissions needed for displaying the StoryWalk. Once again, community leaders are often very enthusiastic about projects that encourage and unite social togetherness.

Plan for needs:

  • Assess the materials used to construct the StoryWalk (can your team build the posts/mounts do you need to hire an outside vendor, etc.)
  • Plan with your team/vendor which material will work best for your location. (Consider weather, usage, time)
  • Ensure that there are plans to maintain the site and to rejuvenate the StoryWalk as needed.

As part of the ChangeX community, you will have a second meeting with Rebecca from the Let's Play America team to answer all your questions and help you make your StoryWalk the best it can be!

Launch your StoryWalk!

When it's time to launch your StoryWalk, consider a kick-off event such as a Block Party or Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony to engage as many people as possible.

  • Print and post signage
  • Get the StoryWalk on the agenda of a community meeting
  • Once open, observe how families use and interact with the space.
  • Share your experience with other communities.

*Enjoy and think about how you can continue to spread Playful Learning throughout your city!*
