Play Parks offers free and accessible physical activity sessions once a week for children, fostering their fundamental movement skills, social connections, and engagement with their local community.
Play Parks had its humble beginnings during the COVID-19 pandemic in a small park located in Johannesburg, South Africa. Recognizing the profound impact of the pandemic on children's social connections and physical activity, Kids Collab took the initiative to create a safe and engaging space where local children could come together with their parents and caregivers. Week after week, children and their families gathered at this park, experiencing the joy and benefits of Play Parks sessions. The program provided a much-needed outlet for children to interact, play, and develop their fundamental movement skills, all while adhering to necessary health and safety protocols.
Numerous barriers hinder children's physical activity, ranging from the influence of technology and lack of support and resources for educators, to parents' time constraints and constant distractions. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated these challenges, limiting access to suitable play settings and social interactions for children.
Recognising these barriers and the importance of early physical development, Kids Collab has developed Play Parks with a clear vision: to enhance physical development and well-being in pre and primary school children by empowering and equipping community members with the necessary tools, resources, and knowledge. By engaging community members as Play Park leaders, Kids Collab aims to create accessible and inclusive spaces where children can engage in free, structured play sessions that promote fundamental movement skills and social connections.
Through Play Parks, Kids Collab strives to address the systemic issues that hinder physical activity in young children and provide support to educators, parents, and communities. By leveraging the expertise and resources of Kids Collab, Play Parks aims to foster a love for physical activity, lay a foundation for a healthy lifestyle, and contribute to the overall well-being of children in communities across various demographics.
