Welcome to Community Composting on ChangeX. Food waste is the largest category of material in municipal landfills, where it creates methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. By composting our food waste we can greatly reduce the amounts of methane produced. Removing food scraps from your garbage also helps keep order to a minimum!. In addition, the compost produced can reduce the need for chemical fertilizers and produce higher-yielding crops. We're excited to help you start a local composting program with your community group, church, school, or workplace! Or even a personal worm bin for your home, workplace, or apartment.

Found Asian Jumping worms in my protected bins, so I will be putting the program on hold.
I will continue to do the in home worm bin consultations, and builds so that people can still create their own worm castings.
I will also continue to do community worm bin classes like the one coming up on Sept 17th with the city of WDM.

Do you have a worm bin? I would like to interview you as I am coming up with a list of best practices and best DYI bins.
I’ve been invited to have a vermiculture display at the upcoming Nine Square Feet’s compost day in June! More details on the way… but I understand there will be a drawing!!!
Here is a great video on making worm tea. She then uses it for her hydroponic system that already has water flowing through it. That’s important because I would recommend diluting the worm tea before putting it directly on your lawn or foliage.
Can’t wait to use this in my new hydroponic garden tower that I am making from 5 gallon buckets!!!
Pictures to come.

Here are some pictures from the Worm Bin Workshop that happened in correlation with the City of WDM at the Raccoon River Nature lodge.
The Wormery has partnered with the City of WDM to offer a DYI Worm Bin workshop that will not only help you build a worm bin and castings harvester. By the end of the 1.5 hour workshop you will also learn how to care for the worms and keep your bin healthy. Plus, you will be able to take home a sample packet of worms to get you started!
Register today as the class size is limited.

Hey, there! I just moved to Des Moines and am looking for a place or organization that accepts food scraps. It doesn't look like DSM has a green waste program but I came across your org as a potential resource. Do you accept home food scraps? And if so, do you have a dropoff location or pickup program? Thanks for any insight!
You're so welcome, Teena! I'm glad to know flowers are fine to compost. I wasn't totally sure since they're not technically food. :) I'll keep adding them in my future compost bags!
Thank you so much for the beautiful food scraps for the worms. I love it when people put flowers on the top. It makes it kinda nice!
I have been placing food in the bins after seeing a few worms out there, but I don’t think they are very active yet. Let’s wait until the over night temps are consistently over 50. That said I have noticed a lot of babies lately in my indoor bins. So they are gonna be hungry. Come on warmer weather!
