So our main area for our block is complete- our little free library is here and it is covered with pollinators! We have already had members of our block sitting down and enjoying nature- now we have another thing to draw people in- our library that will be filled with books about, gardening, nature, and lots of books for kids!
So, we are moving along and getting our neighborhood pollination zones up and running. We decided to set up a central area for neighbors to meet and enjoy each other while supporting our pollinators and spread reading to our neighborhood kids! We installed the benches so that people can sit and visit or just watch the pollinators and relax with nature. We are now waiting on our little free library that we are going to decorate with bumble bees and other pollinators to add to our main garden zone. We decided to create a main area for pollinators that would educate people AND bring our neighbors closer together and encourage more interactions. We are going to put books about pollinators, plants, animals, and nature in the little free library so that kids will want to stop by and they will learn about how to protect the planet. Also, we are waiting on our signs to designate our pollinator areas on our block. This truly was a neighborhood effort to bring us together and already it’s working! Our plan is to use our garden as local teaching tool and demo garden for our neighborhood. We want to have our garden to an example to our local neighbors, filled with information and a sitting area where people can relax, read and take in the beauty of nature in the big city. Sometimes, living in a big city like Chicago, we can lose track of how important nature is and what an important role pollinators like bees, butterflies, and birds play in keeping plants growing. Our funds will help to build our example pollinator garden and then to help buy plants to help our neighbors set up there pollinator areas- even a small addition of plants, a water source, or other things can help keep our pollinators healthy and even us living in the city can help!
We will use the money to secure an area for planting our garden and developing the information for our neighbors. Then, we will be buying additional native pollinator friendly plants, watering areas, and other accessories that we will help our neighbors plants in their pollinator zones.
