In the middle of a year of unrest and uncertainly we found a fun refuge for a group of girls to play in the digital and reality realms of life! Our group was able to meet Friday’s at a local church/coffee shop where they provided a huge indoor ballroom space and plenty of outdoor space to gather. Weekly we worked through the Girls Who Code curriculum and learned new ways of building code in Scratch.
We started with all our COVID policies in place in the fall. Masks, distancing and user only computers. This helped us navigate one of the worst societal impacts of their lives and keep them safe. For a few meetings we had to utilize Zoom and could work together and share our screens. The girls grew in their neuro-flexiblity and responded well to all our adjusting along the way. As the surge of cases diminished we resumed in person. This time using more outdoor space and sharing of tables and interactive joy. Having a club that is as versatile and flexible made life for these girls feel normal and empowering.
Over the weeks we spoke a lot about the words we use, the tools we create and how this all serves our community. They learned how it impacts their own lives for the best. For instance using “thank you” more often than “sorry,” when responding to the day to day life interactions with friends. Collaboration now has meaning, while conditional, loops and logic all have a significant role in our daily lives. This type of gained knowledge and experience was powerful in the girls eyes and it is my hope that it continues to be built upon.
YEAH!!!! We did it!!! We got SEVEN girls together today to log into the HQ, read the first assignment and start on Scratch!!!! So proud of the day and their patience with all the new parts of logging into the programs! Can't wait to see their name presentations next week!
Starting our first set up session tomorrow!!! We are excited and have a great group of girls ready to start something new! I'm more nervous and excited than them! Here goes a new project!
Great News! I heard back from our #1 host site and they said we are good! I'll send out an email today to set a time and visit the site to sign papers! Great work team!!!
Wanted to post an update! We are awaiting the approval from our #1 choice for location. Out application is 90% complete at Girls Who Code and the facilitators will be asked to fill out their background checks via email. #progress
CONGRATULATIONS! We are moving forward everyday! I'll be sending out a survey for times and confirming with our "hope" site. Fridays appear the best option and time is the final hurdle.
WE DID IT!!! Great work team!!! Our meeting today got us to the 100% point for our launch! We have some work ahead of us and then LOTS of FUN!!! This is gonna be good!
We had a great launch meeting! We have two volunteers as facilitators and two actions to work on this week: secure a location and post fliers in groups in the community. We hope to launch the group the first week of December for 10 weeks. The girls are already asking for access to build on what they learn in class to access all week. THIS IS GOING TO BE FUN!
