The Programme
FIRST® LEGO® League shows young people what it means to be an engineer and work with STEM skills and subjects, but focuses on practical, hands-on learning, so they are doing, not watching. FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge is designed for 9-16 year-olds and develops key skills that are crucial for their future careers. Young people work together to explore a given topic and to design, build and program an autonomous LEGO® robot to solve a series of missions.
Robot Game - Teams build a robot using a LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Prime kit that they program to autonomously complete a series of missions on a specialised field to score as many points as possible.
Innovation Project - Teams research the annual theme as detailed in the Challenge documentation pack. After exploring different ideas, they identify one problem related to the theme, design a solution to solve it, and develop a presentation to communicate that solution.
Robot Design - Teams explain the process of designing, building and programming the LEGO® robot they are using in the Robot Game.
Core Values - Teams work together constantly to solve problems and create solutions.
The six Core Values that run through each programme are Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, Teamwork and Fun. These Core Values are integral to the programme, and whilst they are working towards an end goal and have many objectives, developing these skills is the most important part of the programme for participants. The programme gives all children in a team equal opportunity and each team member must contribute in order for the team to be successful.
What you can do
Teachers and coaches are fully supported with comprehensive resources available to download on the Learnit and IET websites, training videos, digital assets and support.
You can sign up here, and if you're in a location with funding, complete the 30 Day Challenge to get grant funding to cover all the costs associated with delivering the programme in your school or community group. The team at Learnit (Ireland) or the IET (UK) will support you through the process.

To date we have attended an introduction to Lego at Dublin City University. This was an extremely enjoyable experience. The information that was giving during this four hour introduction was immensely beneficial. As this group of students where the first to be introduced to the Lego league, we had to spend some time building the missions and the learning that took place with this alone was huge. This groups of students had now left our programme and our next intake is Monday 21/11/2022. These students will have the added bonus of having everything set up and ready to go. We will have a class based Lego league competition. Our four Lego Spike Prime kits, our Lego league challenge mat and four brand new Samsung Galaxy Tablets will be in full flight come the 21st.
The impact the Lego league has had on our students already is amazing! They have learnt how to work as individuals and also as a team to solve problems while also learning new skills they never thought they'd be able to do. We have literally only touch the tip of the iceberg and already we can see the benefit this will have on the students. With the funding we have received so far, we have been able to buy 4 Lego spike prime kits. Thank you so much, we really can't express how grateful we are.
Action Plan
Meeting on 24/06/2022 Our First Lego League Challenge 10:00am
In attendance: Brother John- Joe O’Brien- Clare Hughes- Ann Murray- Chris Cleary
At this meeting, we discussed the process of applying for the funding, which we will use to buy the Lego kits. As some of the team members were also having difficulty joining the team, we also discussed how they could properly access the team on Change X. We also discussed how our programme would develop further by having the Lego League Challenge in the Centre and the impact that this would have on our students. Running the Lego League will be extremely beneficial to our students as they are the type of student that excels through activity-based learning. Our students will further develop their communication skills, problem solving skills, team building/ working skills and increasing their resilience to name a few.
As our programme runs four 6-week programmes throughout the school year, we also discussed how we can design a programme that will cater for our individual students needs which will be based on their Individual Education Profiles/ Behaviour plans.
Tasks to be completed are:
• Have all members from the zoom meeting included into the team section on Change X.
• Complete the remaining steps as outlined in the First 30 Day Lego League Challenge.
• Begin to explore the Lego League tasks.
We have agreed to meet in three weeks to discuss the progress on things 15/07/2022.
