Transition Town Telford is a community group focused on developing local resilience in the face of climate change, decreasing fossil fuels and sustained economic downturn. Our projects include promoting gardening through a garden share scheme and a "Growing Gardeners" Project to encourage sharing skills and resources so local people can grow their own food as well as developing local renewable energy schemes. The Garden Share scheme puts people who want to grow their own food in touch with people who cannot manage their own gardens. The gardeners give some of the produce they grow back to the garden owner.
The "Growing Gardeners Project" involves (i) attendance at local community events to promote growing your own food - with a children's activity transplanting seedlings or sowing seeds (depending on the time of year) for the childrren to take home and grow on, selling any surplus plants members can contribute, a seed swap and giving away secondhand gardening books and magazines; (ii) a Telford-wide Garden Skills share event which will feature various workshops, demonstrations and stalls where people can demonstrate their skills (this will include composting, growing perenial vegetables, keeping chickens, sharpening tools, and hydroponics), a giant swap - with seeds, plants books, magazines, produce, and tools, and informtion about other local gardening and environmental groups and (iiI) a series of smaller, follow-on sharing events in local centres. The large event will probably be held in April and will hopefully be Lottery funded. We are hoping to attract at least 70 visitors.
The group has also taken on a small neglected and overgrown permaculture garden infested with ground elder in the grounds of the local Small Woods centre. This has also included bringing back to life two very smelly compost heaps, which are now used by the Centre's cafe.
