Let Grow Play Club itself is very simple: Just let kids onto the playground or into the gym before or after school and let them play! Play Club involves unstructured play, kids of all ages playing together and adults stepping back.
Why this Matters
Many of today’s children spend their out-of-school time in adult-directed activities—from soccer to dance class to drama to tutoring. Even children who do have free time, like after school, are often glued to screens because parents are afraid to allow them outside. At the same time,
the pressure of high-stakes testing has resulted in more seat time and dwindling recess during the school day. Is it any wonder that behaviour problems are increasing and more children than ever are suffering from anxiety and depression?
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “ The benefits of play cannot really be overstated in terms of mitigating stress, improving academic skills and helping to build the safe, stable and nurturing relationships that buffer against toxic stress and build social-emotional resilience.”
An easy, almost no-cost solution for schools, rec centers, and other organizations is to host a Let Grow Play Club, where kids of all ages can enjoy unstructured free play outside of regular school hours.

The importance of play in supporting early child development is widely recognised and championed. Many parents are not aware of the benefits play contributes to their child's growth, learning, development and wellbeing, many others are unsure of how to initiate simple play experiences with their child. The Let Grow Play Club Carrickmacross will provide meaningful play opportunities for children from diverse backgrounds living in the Carrickmacross area.
Lets Grow Play Club Carrickmacross is scheduled to take place on Friday, 4th November in a community venue in Carrickmacross town. We will be inviting children who live in Carrickmacross and the surrounding area to attend. We will specifically target children from migrant communities including those who are refugees and asylum seekers as they are disproportionately impacted by social exclusion. There are two emergency direct provision centres in the town providing accommodation to families seeking asylum. There is also an expanding refugee community including Ukrainians who have recently arrived in the area. Our aim is to engage a minimum of 35 children, however, we anticipate that the attendance will be greater as the event is occurring during mid -term break.
The team have met to agree the key aims of the event and to confirm a date and venue. The team will meet again prior to the event to plan the promotion of the event and the roll out of activities and responsibilities on the day.
We will use the allocated seed funds to purchase a variety of play resources including giant games and sports equipment.
A Covid 19 safety plan will be in place following local guidelines and providing sanitizer stations to keep everyone involved safe. A risk assessment will be conducted prior to the event to ensure the safety of all attendees.
We hope to provide the following activities on the day:
Large Garden Games (Jenga & Connect 4)
Loose Parts
Arts & Crafts
Paint
Skipping
Ball Games, bats, frisbies
Den Building
Sensory Play
