€1000 is alot of cash, how many fruit trees and bushes do you intend to plant? Are you planning on installing very mature trees or young saplings? You could plant out at least 30 or more saplings for a grand, any interest in local businesses sponsoring the idea?
Andrew, I applied for €2,000 or more I think, but we could get a lot done with free man-power for €1,000 just plants and stakes?
Hi Colm, great initiative, shame about the energia grant. What's your estimated cost for the project, how many berry bushes, fruit trees are you going with? I've dealt with www.futureforests.ie in the past for community projects they usually do a decent deal

Unfortunately, on this occasion, you have not been successful in your application to the Energia Get Ireland Growing Fund.
We are as disappointed as you are but with over 700 applications for 85 awards we had some really difficult choices to make. We wanted to make sure that there was a good balance between completely new and existing community food growing projects and that as many groups across the island of Ireland were supported.
Please don't be too disheartened or let this news stop the plans you have for your great project. We know that you would have put the money to good use and whilst we can't help you with funding this time around, we can give you lots of support, information and advice that can help you realise your growing dreams. I've applied to Energia Get Ireland Growing Fund today for a grant to get this project happening. Deadline is this Friday, so fingers crossed?
Ard bliain faoi mhaise dhaoibh! I got a supportive email response from the Head of Parks, just before the break. He is broadly supportive, and I have to get some support from local residents group and some schools. This shouldn't be a problem. So I'll get onto this over next couple weeks and keep you all updated. He agreed that this corner of the Park needs some attention.
Thinking of the area here? Could do with some love?
I like the ideas of pollinators and fruit certainly fits this, the wall is west facing, and would be great for berries/fruit. I shall look at the Energia grant scheme too!
Very nice - is it only trees we're planting? I really like the idea of planting plants that will bear fruit the residents can consume and thought that a couple bushes (blackberry perhaps) might be nice idea.
What is the orientation - ideal if south facing. This link tells you easily - https://www.sunearthtools.com/dp/tools/pos_sun.php?lang=en. Overhanging trees might cast shadow and drink up water, but there are options for shade- eg morello cherry can deal with some shade. And some berries can do ok in shade. With the wall you can espalier or fan trees flat against the wall so you take up little space, fruit earlier etc. we have similar type space here - do you want to come over here this weekend I will show you what we have done - might generate some ideas? Also don’t forget that Energia grant scheme that is open now for exactly this type of scheme.
I have contacted Parks and awaiting further response...so shall let you all know? In terms of planting, we are well early in the season...
Nearly twenty members, one week on! Superb encouragement..I'll work on approaching the Parks Depart now...I'm there most mornings with a small black/tan crossbreed around 8:45-09:30 if you are around?

Aisling, we are thinking fruit trees? Along the western facing wall, ie. the south-eastern corner?
Really like the idea of apple trees, Cloughjordan have experience of planting apple trees along their paths, may be worth connecting to see what worked best for them.
