Garden Pocket Forest in the Ollie's

A Pocket Forest is a small area of densely planted native trees, shrubs and ground cover. Our aim is to bring a forest ecosystem to the heart of towns and cities. Pocket Forests co-create healthy biodiverse spaces in urban areas which can help alleviate several growing problems: flooding, drought, biodiversity loss and the wellbeing of deprived urban communities. Through learning-while-doing workshops we aim to help people to feel like they belong in shared green spaces and can be part of a community of neighbours who enjoy the benefits of connecting with nature on their doorsteps.

A large Pocket Forest is planted in an area of 25square metres (5mx5m). We plant 75 native trees and shrubs using at least 12 different species.

The Pocket Forests team of Amy, Ashe and Catherine will lead the workshops to engage residents in co-creating the shared green amenities. Another aim is to improve residents well-being, sense of community and stewardship of shared areas and feel a part of the climate crisis solution.

We planted a mixture of native Irish trees and shrubs along a section of our new school walkway. We also planted some wildflower seeeds around the area. We hope in time to get a bench placed in front of them. As the trees grow, they will be seen by many students and staff as they enjoy the walkway. Students had great fun preparing the soil and planting the trees. Other members of the community helped us gather materials like coffee beans, cardboard boxes and wood chip.

Covid Safety
Meetings of team socially distanced and masks worn
While working outside with students on trees, masks will be worn if students within 2 metres of each other
Hand sanitizer will be used if equipment being shared between students

Netting and wire to support and protect trees

How Community will Benefit
The plan is to populate trees along a planned walking route that is being created around the school sports pitches, as well as in a garden area for senior students. The school community of approximately 1600 will benefit from having the trees enhance the school grounds. The environmental impact will also be highlighted in many curricular areas. Many parents will also use the school walking route when waiting to collect students from school or from sporting events.
