Happy Pollinator Week from Full Circle Farm! We have bees!!!! 🐝 Tomatoes and Blackberries coming to the table soon. Very excited how this whole project turned out.
Today we finished planting over 400 bulbs. The pond is thriving and flowers are blooming!!!! Today we also submitted our bee friendly farm certification. Can’t wait to see our small town on the map!
The pond is pretty much complete! We will be filling out our application for Bee Friendly Farming. Almost everything is planted. Still waiting on the 400 bulbs and elderberry. Today I am going to try and get watermelon and cantaloupe plants in the ground. So far we’ve seen lots of pollinators starting to come around. Besides bees it’s interesting to see the hummingbird moth.
We have been sharing updates with the community and will be bringing more awareness through virtual earth day and drive through farmers markets. We have supported local farmers and businesses as well as the Arbor Day Foundation with this project.
It has been an awesome learning experience for our kids and my students that are being exposed to the project.
This will continue to be a community project as any excess produce that we get will be given back to those in need and also shared with students at HCPS.
After a big storm yesterday the pond got filled up. It’s almost done being dug. Next steps is for the liner and fountain to be added for fresh water for the bees. We are about half way done planting at this point. Being careful only to use enough mulch to support the tree growth.
This Earth Day we will be giving out 150 packets of bee friendly seeds to the community. This will involve folks during these trying times. Both The Town of Halifax Farmers Market and South Boston Farmers market will be giving these free to kids and families. What better way to spread the love!
Today we ordered seed packs to hand out at the South Boston Farmers Market for HCPS students. This will be in celebration of Earth Day. I think it’s a great way to promote kids being outdoors, our project, knowledge about pollinators, and also provide a little love during this hard time.
The pond is about a quarter of the way done. The entire bottom field is planted minus the 400 bulbs we are still waiting on.
Arbor Day Foundation let us know that the trees are on the way. Kayden Worley has been an excellent helper daily! She planted the entire herb garden and has been collecting rocks from the field to go around the edge of the pond!
Plants are starting to trickle in. We supported the Halifax County High School Greenhouse this week. Went by Abbott’s for herbs, flowers, and seeds. Bush Hogging is done. First tilling is done. Discing the land is next. We’ve also broken ground on the pond to provide bees fresh water. A pond liner and solar fountain were purchased and on the way. Making huge progress this week. Couldn’t do it without help of our local community!!!! Supporting small in the hard time.
Well the coronaVirus has really put us in a pickle. We are going to make lemonade out of our lemons though. My children and I will begin the project and the Landscaping and Ag classes can put on the finishing touches!
We have also supported several individuals, businesses, and farms locally with this project! This is a great way to spread the love during this tough time. Today we pledged another $250 to a local farm for Pollinator Plants!
The area has been measured and meets the 3-6% requirements. Students in Agriculture and Landscaping Classes are in the beginning stages of mapping out and planning soil amendment and planting. Full Circle Pizza will share updates with the community during Earth Day at the Halifax County Farmers Market Earth Day celebration. We will be handing out bee friendly seeds as well to spread the love with the locals!
What a great start today. We had the planting area surveyed and plans to bush hog are in the works. From there local students will take over for a bit. We plan on the soil being tested so AG students can work the land and begin planting. While most of our funds are going towards trees, shrubs, and flowers we are also working on plans for a pond and irrigation.
Denise Barksdale from our local Farmers Market in Halifax came and we discussed how to involve the community further with this project. Megan Throckmorton who will be overseeing some of the students also manages a local farmers market that we hope to “bee” a part of as well.
Today we looked into various plants, trees, and shrubs that will be grown for the pollinators. We are looking into bat and bee houses currently to also add to the project. All participants in our group have been super supportive and we can’t wait to get started.
