GIY Tramore has started a junior growing project with the children resident in Ocean View, which is the venue for our meetings.  Under the supervision of our four volunteers – Willie, Nicky, Lonan and Jim – and Centre manager Shirley, they got off to an enthusiastic start today preparing the soil in their two raised beds.

GIY TRAMORE SCARECROW COMPETITION

In June GIY Tramore, in conjunction with the local Tidy Towns, ran its second scarecrow competition for the local primary schools. The winning scarecrow is then displayed in the GIY vegetable patch, which is in a very public spot at the entrance to Tramore town and demonstrates how growing edibles can work in a small space and look attractive into the bargain. Tramore is always a strong contender in the national Tidy Towns competition and the addition of the scarecrow to our garden enhances that aspect of urban growing.
Three of the four local schools participated and Anne Cheasty of Tramore Tidy Towns had the unenviable task of picking out a winner. The winners this year were Tramore Educate Together N.S., with joint runners-up from Glór na Mara and Gaelscoil Philib Barún. All received vouchers for the GIY shop, which they can use to continue the great work that’s being done in their school gardens.
