Friends of the Chicago River is determined to get rid of trash. With your help. For forty years Friends has been raising awareness that the Chicago River is a precious natural resource that needs to be protected. Litter and sewage remain an issue and together we can change this. The "Litter Free Chicago River" campaign is an on-the-ground public awareness campaign where we lead cleanups and share our Litter Free Chicago River Toolkit so that anyone can start cleanups on their own with friends, family, community, and workplace. We are here to be a resource to support more people to host their own cleanups and create a multiplier effect. So the next time you see trash in or along the river you'll know you can do something about it!
Litter is not only an eyesore, but it's the most visible sign of pollution. It has serious effects. Litter kills aquatic life, is a public health issue, and is exacerbated when there are combined sewer overflows that discharge sewage right into the river after a rainfall. Increasing development along the Chicago River could add to the problem. Despite legal requirements to protect the river from floatables and meet combined sewer overflow permit requirements, we're still not doing a good job keeping trash and sewage out of the river system.

Our cleanup was a success! We split up into smaller groups and were able to tackle the Chippewa River head on! We collected so much garbage and the area looks so much cleaner now. Thank you to everyone that came out to support our biggest cleanup yet and thank you to changeX for giving us the inital funding to provide the people with vests and sanitary precautions. We are going to continue with our smaller cleanups around the northwest suburbs...Make sure to check out our Facebook to stay updated or subscribe to our newsletter

We will have a cleanup around the Chippewa Woods River. We plan to meet in June to complete the clean up seeing as many students will be out of school at the time. We will also have better weather then. The cleanup will happen over the course of a day an we will send out different groups to different areas of the river to divide and conquer our goal. The seed funding will be used to purchase vests for our volunteers so that they can be spotted along the roads and in the woods. We will also need funding for grabbers and gloves to pick up the litter and bags to put the trash in. Finally we also plan to have water bottles at the function, when we have breaks during the cleanup. Our community will benefit from a cleaner river and environment around the woods, because upon seeing the cleanness the community is more likely to keep it clean and we are more likely to use the beautiful space that is the Chippewa River and woods for things like picnics or functions.
