“Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of African-American slaves. Originating in Galveston, Texas, it has been celebrated annually on June 19 in various parts of the United States since 1865. The day was recognized as a federal holiday on June 17, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. Juneteenth's commemoration is on the anniversary date of the June 19, 1865, announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army general Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas, which was the last state of the Confederacy with institutional slavery.”

Juneteenth was a very successful event which hosted various organizations and community members that helped develop our community atmosphere.

This event engaged local community members by shutdowning down a section of N New Braunfels. This enabled them to participate in our activities. We were able to find individuals that managed a bounce house for local youth. Other activities included, community garden walkthroughs, vendors, movie screenings, speeches, and live music. This project also enabled us to pass out over 45+ reclaimed bicycles at a local community hub prior to the event. We also passed out flyers to the surrounding community in order to increase community engagement during the event. The Change X grant enabled us to purchase the street shut down permit. From there, our team worked with local community members to gather more sponsorships that helped us purchase signage for the area.
