“Was it for this the Wild Geese spread the grey wing on every tide?”
Welcome to the Grow Remote and the Wild Geese chapter! This group was set up on November 4, 2018 and is run by volunteers and mystic gladiators . We are keen to build a thriving community of remote workers in and around Lough Derg. Our HQ is based in Portumna, Co. Galway. However, our community has no boundaries, borders or frontiers.
Not everyone leaves or should feel the need to leave their home to find an opportunity to work. Lough Derg and environs is a treasure chest of highly skilled and educated people working or not working. The aim of this group is not only to raise awareness of the opportunities of working remotely but to build a community where you can work remotely together and look for support on your journey.
According to this Remote How Survey, 62% of people don’t work remotely because they don’t know where to start. We want to change that for our 200,000+ remote workers and those who would like to convert to remote working.
Who is the Wild Geese for?
Regardless of your industry, background or whether you're working remotely full time, we are keen to have you on board. This is an opportunity for:
Remote Workers
Traditional Workers who would like to try out Remote Work
Our Diaspora - who are looking for an opportunity to return home
Parents of our Diaspora who would like to learn more!
The Curious - those of you who have not heard about remote work
The Homemakers - those of you who paused your working life to nurture our young geese
Become one of Wild Geese first members and be the first to share in its vision, and support the work of its volunteers.
Grow Remote hope to reinvent how people work, share knowledge, tell stories, and inspire more people to experience this way of life.
A note from the founder of Grow Remote
Welcome to Grow Remote on ChangeX! We're building a national movement to connect remote workers in Ireland. We believe we’re in the middle of a seismic change in ways of working that opens up a whole new opportunity for a better quality of life, for remote workers and for rural Ireland. We'll help you do this in your local community by starting a Grow Remote Chapter.

For jobs posted here, you can be sure they *MUST* be available to any citizen in Ireland. They hope Remote Jobs Ireland will contribute to the growing the movement of remote work in Ireland, started by Grow Remote.

Afternoon y’all from lovely lakeside Portumna. Apologies, I have been M.I.A., just coming out of an intense period of work with the European Election Campaign. Now that the dust has settled, I have more bandwidth to continue the great work of the Grow Remote movement.
It is great to see our chapter grow to 32 members and that already the remote working community is self-organising and having informal meetups. I am a big fan of the agile approach! Evert contacted me about arranging an informal Open Coffee House type meeting up and I can add these events here. He suggested once a month which I think is realistic as everyone is fairly busy with work/play projects. I am more a fan of meeting for coffee in the mornings and never meet after 6pm as I turn into a Vampress then ;-) And the word COMMITTEE is a bad word. Let me know your thoughts.
Anne and I have been working on holding a more formal event in the space over Ca to Ca which is finally opened. The goal is to bring remote employers, remote workers together to take about remote work, how to get started, how to have a portfolio career and so on. We want to approach it from Beginner to Seasoned Remote Worker. We have also got permission to have an event in the Castle from the OPW which was an achievement in itself. I think an event in the castle could be combined with a garden “fete” with live music and so on, without going all Blue Sky on it!
Anne and I have also been working with a Digital Agency around creating a tourism app for not only Portumna, but all of the large towns in East Galway. We are hoping to get Leader Funding for the app, and have submitted a formal application to Leader. The app is already live in other towns of our size - check out Fermoy, Cobh or even Galway’s Westend. They use an open source mapping system called Mapbox - I am sure the developers here are familiar with it. Watch this space for updates.
I would encourage everyone to follow the Grow Remote Movement here:

https://twitter.com/GrowRemoteIrl
https://growremote.ie/
And the newly designed website with crowd-sourced document/directory. There is also a SLACK channel, and if you wish to be invited, just send me a message.
We have also created an ebook called Going Remote which is very comprehensive A-Z on the steps for a novice to information for more experienced remote workers.
I intentionally called our group Wild Geese as opposed to Portumna to try and capture the lakeside towns and villages. Helena runs the Loughrea chapter and Renate runs the Ballinasloe chapter. It is worth joining these two in particular as each will have different events and posts. Renate is an experienced in the whole world of remote working having steered Wayfair to 100% remote.
We have also created an ebook called Going Remote which is very comprehensive A-Z on the steps for a novice to information for more experienced remote workers and also open source and growing. Message me with your email if you would like a copy.
Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

Great meetup with Evert, Jose, and Mark today at Blas Cafe Portumna. We have planted a seed of Portumna Grow Remote (Work, Play, Learn and Grow). Hopefully, it is a start to some meaningful connections, lots of fun and some interesting community projects. Thank you guys for connecting. Pity we didn't take any pictures... Next time :) Joanna & Mark
Hi Mark, Never mind, you can join us at the next meeting. We will keep you posted. Joanna
Sorry I missed this. I'll try get to the next meet-up. I'm based in Portumna. Frontend lead for Annertech (a company of 20+ remotes based in Ireland, UK, France, Holland, Croatia, etc). Nice to meet you.
Hey guys, de-lurking time!
I'm based in Portumna and work from home for Apple (for over a year now).
Was involved in the whole work form home thing back in the late 90's when it was called teleworking/telecottage and have als worked as start-up mentor for a number of organisations throughout the years.
I would like to suggest that we have a meetup with people based in/near Portumna to see what everyone is doing, how we can assist each other and how we can promote working form home.
Hands up who is interested.
Evert.
Hi guys. I work remotely for Dell Technologies and live in Portumna. Found you guys via the Grow Remote Twitter feed. Happy to share experiences & learn from you guys on remote working in this area
Hi, short notice. some of us are meeting in the beehive at 12 to-day
Hi Michael, I just had a quick look. There are a couple of IT people in our group. Not everyone revealed what they do. It would be great to meet and see if we could collaborate on something or give each other support. It seems like we have a really interesting mix of people.
Hi Joanna - currently working in an Emea sales strategy & planning (Support) Team but I’ve had a few roles within Dell. Not a developer unfortunately! How about you? I never knew we had a Digital Marketing co in Portumna! That’s exciting
Hi everyone. I just joined the group. I have not updated my photo as yet. My partner and I live in Portumna and run a digital marketing company. Is there a way to see who the other members are and what they do?
Your experience working from home will involve plenty of twists, turns, fails, and wins. Be patient as you and your team adjust, expect the unexpected, and just roll with it. At least you can rest easy knowing you won’t be the first remote worker whose toddler makes an unplanned cameo on international television.
